First Pitch

First Pitch

First Pitch is a market trader start-up scheme run by the National Market Traders Federation, delivered in partnership with market operators all over the UK.

It is part-funded by RBS Group’s Inspiring Enterprise programme and is supported by the UK Government, the National Association of British Market Authorities and Love Your Local Market.

Entrepreneurs on First Pitch trade for free for up to five days during Love Your Local Market, and – following assessment by the NMTF and the market operator – will trade for another 12 months at staggered rent.

They also receive personal support from the NMTF, including: one year’s membership, a copy of market trader support guide, NMTF First, and a mentor for 12 months, someone who know market trading inside-out.

In May 2014, traders supported by First Pitch are invited to attend a Markets Master Class and Award Ceremony – and one will receive £2,000 to boost their business to the next level!

Throughout each stage of First Pitch, new traders on the scheme are covered under the NMTF’s business insurance cover, which includes product and public liability claims up to £5 million.

First Pitch is open to any UK resident over 16 who has less than six months experience of market trading.

The closing date for this year’s cohort of First Pitch market traders is Friday, 19th April. To apply and to take your pitch on your local market visit

“By offering me the chance to trade on a market, First Pitch provided me with a direct route to my customers to test my product range and to receive face-to-face feedback.

“The scheme provided the vital support every new business needs in those early days, and it is testament to this support structure that Dulce Kitchen is still going strong in its second year of trading.

“A lot of people dream of starting their own business and I strongly believe that First Pitch offers those individuals the chance and platform to achieve their entrepreneurial ambitions.

“The amount of hard work required to start your own business should not be under estimated and you have to really believe in what you’re doing to get you through those inevitable tough days.

“However the people you’ll meet along the way and the rewarding experiences you’ll have makes every long day worthwhile.”
