We’ve heard on the Love Your Local Market grapevine that the fabulous Maria, oh she of Borough Market Bubble and squeak fame, has just become the markets longest serving trader, celebrating 50 years behind the counter at Maria’s Market Café on Monday 16th June.

Borough Market’s Chair of Trustees, Donald Hyslop and Managing Director, Keith Davis, along with staff and traders surprised Maria with a special gift and one of a kind designed cake to celebrate her 50 years of dedicated service.

This London legend has had a lifetime of encounters serving the great and the good, including dignitaries, chefs and celebrities. Last year Maria became the story that hit the headlines, when The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall dropped in for cuppa as they toured the Market to officially reopen Three Crown Square.

On being presented with a specially commissioned cake, Maria said:

“To all at the Market and all my customers, past, present and future, thank you for the memories!”

Donald Hyslop, Chair of Borough Market Trustees said:

“For 50 years Maria has been serving up her legendary bubble and squeak, mugs of tea and words of wisdom to generations of Borough’s shoppers and traders.  She has seen the Market through its evolution from a few stalls to the thriving, world class market that we are today.  Throughout, Maria’s Café has remained at the heart of the market and as we celebrate her golden anniversary, we’d like to say ‘Thank you, Maria and here’s to the next 50 years!’ ”
