Stockport Market Celebrates LYLM 2014

Stockport Market Celebrates LYLM 2014

In 2013, Stockport Market created two weekends of 70s themed events to celebrate LYLM. The launch weekend featured the first ‘Foodie Friday’ late night street food event, which contributed to the 60% increase in footfall over the previous Friday. This event proved so popular that it now runs on the last Friday of every month and includes live entertainment.

The Saturday of ‘Funky Weekend’ included live 70s bands, a trader competition for best 70s dress, a Northern Soul DJ and a local choir. The event saw a rise of 47% in footfall over the previous Saturday and a 62% increase over the average footfall up till that date.
Enthusiastic supporters of the First Pitch scheme, we received the highest number of applications in England and were able to offer 7 applicants the opportunity to trade under the scheme. Three of these have gone on to become regular traders.

This year, we are focusing on one weekend – 16-18 May and linking the celebrations to the Big Dance http://www.bigdance.org.uk/ and a local arts event. Our outline event plan includes a showcase for our event markets – Vintage Village, Teenage Market & the Book & Record Fair and fabulous new food traders from Heaton Moor Market on Underbanks. As added bonuses, this weekend will also see the first birthday of Foodie Friday, Saturday will feature the Stockport Cultural Festival and the Making Headway catwalk show and Sunday sees a Handmade Market.
