Clapham Leaf Club is a project designed to enable pupils of the Clapham and Larkhall Collaborative primary schools initiated by the Venn Street Market, a weekly Saturday fresh food produce market providing some of the best fresh and seasonal produce available from small independent growers and artisan producers.
Kate Greening, co founder and Director of Venn Street Market explained during the Love Your Local Market slot at the industry conference Better Markets, Revitalised High Streets that the children learn all aspects of growing their own food from preparing the soil using organic matter, to sowing seeds and culturing their crops which will be harvested and sold as fruit and vegetables or used in a cuisine and cooked and sold at the Market every year in July.
The market started as a monthly market in 2009 and went weekly in October 2011 when the road was pedestrianised. Clapham’s Venn Street is now the central hub of the village with the local cinema, bars and cafes all benefiting from the redevelopment of the road creating a safe environment for residents to socialise and relax in whilst doing their shopping. The Leaf Club now in it’s third year is getting ready for this year’s food growing project with new exciting ideas and goes from strength to strength.
