North End Road celebrate with veggies

Celebratory markets will be held at North End Road on 21st and 28th May to mark Love Your Local Market Fortnight.

Young entrepreneurs, start up businesses, students and others have been invited to take part in two special Saturday markets on North End Road to celebrate Love your Local Market Fortnight.   The aim is to revitalise and grow the existing market and to launch the LBH&F initiative to provide an affordable retail opportunity to new start-ups and young business people.

Local residents are being invited to visit the market, to experience the friendly atmosphere, great selection and great value of North End Road Market.   The market is fabulous for foodies with its wide selection of fruit and vegetables, four fishmongers, numerous butchers, patisserie, middle eastern and world speciality shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and entertainers at the market, face painting by students of Ealing Hammersmith and West London College and more.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council & North End Road Action Group are also launching an initiative to revitalize North End Road Market by offering new traders and young entrepreneurs the opportunity to try out at the market with BOGOF day pitches, reduced fees for up to six months and other incentives during #LYLM2016

A lack of support for the market in the past combined with changing shopping patterns and an ageing population of traders have led to a number of empty spaces.  Hammersmith and Fulham Council who manage North End Road have been working with community group North End Road Action Group (NERAG) to find ways to revitalize the market and this is one of the results.

North End Road already has a great selection of fruit and vegetables and foodstuffs from around the world and so the initiative will look for traders to complement what is already on offer.   New traders will be chosen by representatives of the Council and NERAG giving priority to young entrepreneurs and new businesses.

The initiative will offer reduced fees and more to help establish new and young entrepreneurs: BOGOF on pitches – book a pitch on one day for £10.00 get the next one free; offer valid for 4 occasions followed by a £10 per day thereafter for a 6 month period following which standard market fees will apply; a waiver of temporary license fees and more.

On 21st May Madame Zucchini, the vegetable entertainer, will be appearing following her performance at BGT; she will do creature making with vegetables and some walkabouts in character.

Last year 1200 markets around the UK took part and this year we are hoping for more.  This UK initiative started in 2012 following growing alarm for the future of the UK High Street and this year is set to be celebrated in 18 countries.

Today’s markets are seeing something of a revival in fortunes. With shoppers wary of long supply chains, emphasised in the 2013 horse meat scandal, we are turning once more to our butchers, bakers and other more traditional outlets, tempted by the assurance of provenance in the goods we are buying, but also to see a friendly face and to support our local businesses.  Love Your Local Market has been devised to herald the changes and to make shoppers aware of what is on offer on their doorstep.
