This is the biggest single issue facing the retail market industry.
We are losing market traders in significant numbers and, although we have started to attract new traders with nationwide initiatives such as the NMTF’s First Pitch and Nabma’s Love Your Local Market, the numbers gained are not keeping pace with the loss.
The markets industry needs to recognise that young people are typically less resilient in attitude and initiative, are naturally multi-channel, and trade and promote specialist products online, thereby developing niche customer bases. Traditional retail markets can appear lacklustre and old-fashioned in comparison.
