02 Jan Marcus Jones visits Portobello and Golborne
The Markets and High Street Minister Marcus Jones MP dropped by Portobello and Golborne Market on Tuesday 15 December to meet traders and get a first-hand account of what street markets can offer shoppers in the twenty first century.
The visit also called attention to Love Your Local Market’s seasonal #lylmxmas campaign and the online competition to find Britain’s Favourite Market.
Mr Jones, whose department has supported the Love Your Local Market Campaign since 2012, met a variety of traders, representing the market’s many traditions, including 90-year-old Dolly Stallard, its oldest street trader.
Mr Jones, who was accompanied on his visit by Kensington MP Victoria Borwick, received a Portobello Market shopper-bag and pin badge to mark the 150 anniversary and a 2016 calendar created by Year 9 GCSE photography students at Sion-Manning Girls’ School.
Portobello and Golborne Market, which is celebrating 150 years of trading this year, is participating in #lylmxmas by encouraging Christmas shoppers to support local traders and shops by taking part in its Christmas Shopping Passport Promotion. Shoppers who collect five tokens when they shop at stalls and stores that feature the Shopping Passport Promotion posters can enter competitions to win festive hampers prize packages donated by participating businesses.
Cllr Will Pascall, who is the Council’s lead member for Environment, Environmental Health and Leisure which is responsible for the market urged residents, visitors and stall holders to help round off Portobello and Golborne Market’s year of celebrations by voting it Britain’s favourite market. “
He said: “I am very pleased that the Minister has visited Portobello and Golborne Market in its 150th year. What started as a milk stall in country lane has grown into the bustling, and colourful market that it is today which attracts thousands of shoppers. I hope that local residents and Londoners and street market traders will help crown its 150th celebrations by voting Portobello and Golborne Britain’s favourite market. “
The competition to find Britain’s favourite market is organised by NABMA (the National Association of British Market Authorities). To vote go to www.nabma.com/britainsfavouritemarket, type the market’s name Portobello and Golborne Market and submit your entry. The competition, which closes on Thursday 31 December, last year attracted over 100,000 votes.
