Legislation – Mission for Markets

Legislation – Mission for Markets

Market rights have always been a contentious item when used by local authorities and other market operators to prevent other markets being held…..

but market rights have legitimate roles to play where they ensure a balanced market offer and maintain quality/standards.

The incorporation of the European Services Directive within law has important implications for markets and street trading but it is vital that any changes proposed under this legislation do not have a prejudicial impact on existing markets and street trading. We need to be able to locate markets in our towns where they can best serve the local community.

In order to do this we need to be free of expensive and long drawn out procedures relating to the closure of highways which currently prevent the holding of many markets or persuade local authorities in particular to resort to street trading legislation rather than market powers.
