15 May Darlington’s Big Market – One of the #MarketBiz15
Darlington Markets are hosting a BIG MARKET event on Saturday 16th May to attract both residents and visitors in celebrating Darlington’s market town.
The event will feature regular and specialist market stalls, street theatre, live music and family entertainment, with Morris dancing and a comedian to get everyone laughing and enjoying the market celebration.
To encourage new traders, Darlington Markets are offering a stall for £10 for the day at the BIG MARKET event and also, as a day trial, are offering a pop up stall in the Victorian Market Hall during the Love Your Local Market fortnight to not only attract new market traders but to celebrate the existing markets and encourage young entrepreneurs to try out market trading in Darlington. The event highlights the importance that Darlington’s historic markets play in the heart of the community, not only for retail but as a valuable focal point to bring people together.
During the Love Your Local Market fortnight, the Market Hall will be displaying an exhibition of drawings that were produced in the late 1980’s of past Darlington market traders, along with local artist demonstrations.
As part of the Love Your Local Market campaign, Darlington Markets are launching a poster competition for the local school children. The competition is to create a poster of the most beautiful fruit and vegetable stall in the world tying into a healthy theme. The children can design any kind of stall they want with lots of fruit and vegetables and brightly coloured. A selection of these posters will be displayed in the Market Hall on the day of the BIG MARKET event for everyone to see. The child with the winning poster will receive a prize of a summer pass to the Dolphin Leisure Centre. There will also be other spot prizes.
During the LYLM fortnight there will also be social media training for market traders to help encourage them to become more digital in there way of working and promoting their business.
