02 Apr Borough traders use technology to drive profits
The Love Your Local Market campaign is now in full swing and we have already had five excellent Roadshows as we build momentum towards the fortnight of the campaign between the 15th -29th May.
Our first call was at Borough Market where a packed audience were able to see the redeveloped market at first hand. It is clear that the redevelopment has enhanced the visual appearance of the market and also Borough’s reputation as one of the leading markets in the country. There was tremendous enthusiasm for getting involved and over half the audience were new to LYLM which is a theme that has continued throughout the Roadshows.
Among the talks on the day, we heard from David Matchett entrusted with Market Development at Borough Market who took us through their rigorous Application Process and then followed this with a talk on how social media is proving a key driver in getting customers to the market. We heard how many traders are now signed up with Foursquare, a geo-location app that not only leads customers directly to your market or stall, but one that they utilise to promote special deals at the end of the day that has led to higher profits and less waste as nearby residents and workers use the power of technology to get some great bargains.
What also came across in David’s talk was how sites like Pinterest are proving a valuable tool in bringing a new generation of customers through the market. This is not only pulling in tourists but introducing Borough Market to Londoners through photography. so remember, next time someone wants to take a picture of your stall, they may just be bringing new customers to you one day …so say cheese.
