Best Small Indoor Market
Chesterfield’s historic Market Hall underwent a £4 million redevelopment with a funding package consisting of £2.1 million of European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Lottery Grant with the remaining money from Chesterfield Borough Council, opening again in October 2013.
The main retail hall has been transformed with a glazed atrium above first floor level, providing natural light. The 1970’s extension on New Square has been redesigned to be more in keeping with the original Market Hall, whilst providing high-quality offices at first floor level.
The majority of existing traders in the market hall were offered space in the new one and provide a wide variety of stalls. The newly refurbished building offers an improved shopping next for the town centre with stalls including: perfume, mobile phone repairs, sweets, footwear, jewellery, butchery and seafood.
WHAT MAKES THIS MARKET GREAT
In order to secure its long-term future we needed to move with the times and the redevelopment has enabled us to deliver modern, light facilities fit for purpose for today’s shoppers. The Market Hall is one of the iconic buildings of Chesterfield and a key part of our history. By restoring the beautiful Assembly Rooms on the first floor to create start-up and small business spaces, we have increased income while playing a part in creating new jobs and developing the local economy.
Traders have reported good business since the redevelopment has opened and a new central café area situated at the heart of the ground floor, offering opportunities for new apprentices to train on the job is proving popular.
With occupancy rates above those predicted we are proud to have had our efforts recognised by winning the NABMA award for the U.K.’s top Small Indoor Market.
